Meet Sam Gilbert, Rock Castle's Music and Adventure Program Director
Tuesday, January 17, 2017
Sam Gilbert was born on the chilly coastline of Northern Michigan – Frankfort, on Lake Michigan to be exact – and moved to the south after college when he took a job teaching in southeast Florida.
He met his wife, Jess, married and started a family in Fort Lauderdale. The Gilbert’s moved to Hendersonville, Tennessee 10 years ago after deciding they needed a more family-friendly place to raise their children. They had visited Hendersonville and fell in love with its homey small town feel and strong sense of community, and with Jess’ family in south Florida, and Sam’s family in northern Michigan, Tennessee was a perfect “middle ground.”
Sam took a job teaching English at Hendersonville High School, and then a second job as Caretaker for Rock Castle. Sam’s love of language, the outdoors and anything adventurous has led him to become Rock Castle’s Director of Music and Adventure. Rock Castle’s summer Songwriters' Night series grew out of his Songwriting class at HHS, and has become one of our very favorite events! He also runs Rock Castle’s adventure camps each summer, where kids learn survival skills, spend their days kayaking on the lake, and learn the rich heritage of Tennessee history. When he’s not teaching or at Rock Castle, Sam enjoys being adventurous with his wife and three kids – their two boys, Canyon (12), Toren (11), and their daughter Kyran (8). The Gilberts love to travel and hike and spend time on the water. This summer they climbed their first 14er in Colorado – Longs Peak – as a family. They also have a passion for youth ministry, leading high school and college-age discipleship groups in their home and doing spiritual adventure retreats in the summer.
Rock Castle has become their home, and Sam would love nothing more than to share that sense of Home with the community!
