Field trips at Historic Rock Castle take your students back in time to live the life of a frontiersman/frontierswoman like Daniel & Sarah Smith, the founders of Rock Castle.
Participants will take a guided tour of the historic home, learning what it was like for the Smith family, which included 2 young children, to live on the North Carolina frontier in 1784. They will engage with daily colonial life through hands-on activities such as Quill Writing and 18th Century Toys & Games. Younger students will try their hand at archaeology in our Discovery Box, and older students will practice their decoding skills on a cipher wheel invented by Thomas Jefferson in our Cipher Secrets activity.
Our field trips align with the Tennessee State Standards for 4th grade American History. However, they are appropriate for all elementary and middle school age students. We also offer more extensive guided tours of the historic home for high school students.
Cost: $5/participant (student and adult); Teachers are free

Sumner Harvest Living history days
Each October, Rock Castle is transformed back to its former way of life, as historical reenactors and demonstrators recreate a 1784 landscape for guests to explore!
Participants will engage with 18th century tradesmen and women including a blacksmith, log hewer, and pottery artisan. They will enjoy hands on interactions with goats and chickens, and even test their skill on the dance floor with a 5 piece band and dance caller! And the highlight of the day may be the historical Magic Show by none other than Rodney the Younger!
Thanks to our generous sponsors, Sumner Harvest is offered free of charge to all Sumner County Schools 4th graders. Parents/chaperones, students from outside Sumner County, private school students, and homeschoolers are welcome to enjoy the event as well, for only $5/guest. Reservations are required and carpooling is strongly recommended.
Dates: Thursday and Friday, October 17 & 18, 2019 — 9:00am - 2:00pm
