Alethia Saunders Sampler, 1831

Alethia Saunders, 1831

Alethia Saunders is one who is held dear to those familiar with Rock Castle. She is the daughter of MaryAnn "Polly" Smith, and grand-daughter of General Daniel and Sarah Smith, original founders of Rock Castle and the State of Tennessee. Her sampler, which she created in 1831 when she was 11 years old, hangs in her grandmother Sarah's parlor at Rock Castle. The handiwork is beautiful and endearing with its childhood imperfections, and we can't help but love this little girl who called Rock Castle "home" 190 years ago.

Alethia Saunders’ sampler was returned to Rock Castle by her 3rd-great granddaughter Grace Alethia Austin Tomkins of Gallatin, Tennessee. Thanks to the heart-filled efforts of Debra Maggart & Melissa Clark Gay, we have a Sampler pattern by world-renowned designer Nicola Parkman of Hands Across the Sea Samplers available for purchase. This would be a wonderful gift for anyone on your list who loves historic Samplers or needlework!

This design has been charted for needleworkers of all abilities and for stitching on both aida and linen. Thread legend includes DMC, AVAS Soie 100/3, and Soie D’Alger threads. Model stitched on 46 count (Bristol) Mocha linen from Weeks Dye Works using AVAS Soie 100/3 silk threads. Stitch count is 177 w X 200 h.

Alethia’s sampler is highlighted in the Tennessee Sampler Survey

“The floral border on Alethia's sampler is also found on a group of samplers from the Carolinas. Pat Veasey's article, ‘Samplers of the Carolina Piedmont: The Presbyterian Connection and the Bethel Group,’ published in the Journal of Early Southern Decorative Arts describes this group and their connection to Tennessee.”
